Why Do Some People Go Grey Sooner Than Others? Can You Stop Hair From Going Grey?

Going grey is a natural part of the aging process, but why do some people get those silver strands sooner than others? Is there a way to slow it down or even reverse it? While we can’t completely stop grey hair from showing up, there are a few things you can do to prevent premature greying, and even embrace it in a healthy way. Let’s take at look at the science behind going grey and what you can do to take care of your hair!

Why Do Some People Go Grey Sooner Than Others?

The first thing you need to know is that greying hair is largely determined by genetics. If your parents or grandparents went grey early, there’s a good chance you might follow suit. As you age, your hair follicles produce less melanin (the pigment responsible for color). Without melanin, hair turns grey, silver, or white.

In addition to genetics, other factors can contribute to premature greying:

  • Stress: Some studies suggest that extreme stress can speed up the greying process, although this is still being researched.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can affect hair pigmentation.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal shifts, particularly during puberty or menopause, can play a role in when your hair starts to grey.
  • Health Conditions: Certain autoimmune diseases, vitamin deficiencies (like B12), or thyroid imbalances may also trigger early greying.

Can You Stop Hair From Going Grey?

While you can’t entirely prevent grey hair from happening, there are ways to slow the process down and keep your hair healthy. Here are some tips:

1. Take More Vitamins

Proper nutrition plays a big role in the health of your hair and skin. Some vitamins and minerals help maintain pigmentation in your hair follicles. Specifically, these nutrients may help:

  • Vitamin B12: A deficiency in B12 has been linked to early greying. It’s important to get enough of this vitamin to maintain healthy hair.
  • Biotin: Known for supporting healthy hair growth, biotin may also play a role in delaying greying.
  • Vitamin D: It helps with hair follicle regeneration and can support your overall hair health.
  • Copper: Copper helps produce melanin in your hair. A lack of copper in your diet may lead to early greying.

You can find these vitamins in foods like leafy greens, eggs, nuts, and fish, or you can supplement them if necessary (but always consult a doctor first!).

2. Don’t Smoke/Try to Quit Smoking

Studies have shown that smoking can accelerate the greying process. It’s believed that smoking damages the blood vessels that supply nutrients to your hair follicles, which can cause them to lose their pigmentation sooner. Quitting smoking doesn’t just benefit your overall health—it may also help slow down the greying of your hair.

 

3. Turn Down the Heat

Excessive heat styling (flat irons, blow dryers, curling irons) can cause damage to your hair and contribute to premature greying. When you frequently expose your hair to high heat, you’re stripping it of moisture and causing it to weaken, which may accelerate the graying process.

If you have to use heat styling tools, make sure to use a heat protectant and try to limit the frequency. The less heat you apply to your hair, the healthier it will be, and the longer it may hold onto its natural color.

5. Manage Stress

While stress isn’t the only reason behind grey hair, it can certainly play a role. Some studies suggest that stress can trigger early greying due to the release of certain hormones and the effect on melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment in hair). Practicing stress-relief techniques like meditation, yoga, exercise, or simply making time for self-care can help minimize the impact stress has on your hair and overall health.
